Pool Party Summer—the 4th Annual Challenge of Colour

ChallengeofColor_badge

Erin Prais-Hintz always runs the coolest challenges, guaranteed to stretch us all as jewellery designers. And this year’s Challenge of Color, the fourth she has held, is no exception. Last year, Erin and her colour guru friend Brandi Hussey provided participants with colour palettes drawn from satellite images of Earth, but this year, we were sent to the fabulous website COLOURlovers to find, or create, our own.

COLOURlovers is a website that lets you create and name colours, palettes and even patterns made using the cool colour palettes you create. With thousands of users, inspiration is a click away.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Challenge without a challenge, right? Erin’s extra twist involved using the names of the colours to create a poem of sorts, using the names of each colour in a game called wordlinks.

From the wordlink instructions…

“with wordlink palettes you start with a two-word (or more) colour name. the next colour name has to start with the last word of the colour before it. each colour continues this way to the end. try to make the last word of the last colour the first word of the first colour. this is really hard, though.”

Sounds like fun, but it’s harder than you’d think! I created two palettes using the Wordlinks game. My first one is called Shimmer Song:

COLOURlovers.com-Shimmer_Song

As the sky shimmers
Shimmer of magic
Magic of starlight
Starlight song
Song of the sky

As this was a muted colour palette, I thought I would make another in brighter colours. This one is called Pool Party Summer:

COLOURlovers.com-Pool_Party_Summer (2)

Summer at the pool
Pool party
Party people
People laughing
Summer of laughs.

I even used the second palette to make a pattern, Summer in the Pool, in keeping with its theme:

COLOURlovers.com-Summer_in_the_pool

Pool Party Summer was the palette I eventually went with, using some wonderfully aquatic lampwork beads made by Vivian Houser at Dragyn’s Fyre Designs (these were some of the first artisan-made lampwork beads I ever bought), knotted onto deep plum waxed linen, along with a large amazonite nugget, dyed fire agate and Czech glass, a pewter mermaid connector from Green Girl Studios and antiqued silver-plated chain and clasp, to make a necklace. It’s a rare foray for me into an asymmetrical design. The matching earrings feature the lampwork beads and a few seed beads knotted onto lavender waxed linen.

Thanks again for another stimulating challenge Miss Erin, it’s always fun! And make sure you visit the other participants in the blog hop (as InLinkz doesn’t work very well on WordPress-hosted websites, you’ll need to visit Erin’s blog to see the full list of participants).

Beads, Markets

Market this weekend

Just a quick post to say I’ll be at Bend and Snap Market in the Melbourne CBD this Sunday from 11am-4pm. It’s a quirky little market in a big gallery space behind the 1000£ Bend Café on Little Lonsdale St. If you’re a Melbourne local, I hope you can come along to see me, and get a bit of Christmas shopping done too.

I’ve only got two more markets left this year after Sunday. I’ll be at the Carnegie Primary School Xmas Craft Market on Friday 6 Dec from 3:30-6:30 and at the last date for The Handmade Show on Saturday 14 December from 10:30-3:30.

Here’s a new necklace and earrings I’ll be selling on Sunday. The pendant is from one of my favourite bead makers:  Natalie Fletcher-Jones of Peruzi, combined with lovely aqua-blue Czech glass and antique silver-plated chain.

The Red and the Blue—the Lampwork and Clay Blog Hop

Today is the reveal date for Lisa Lodge ‘s Lampwork and Clay Blog Hop. Lisa’s challenges always start with a kit, carefully put together by her to reflect the theme of the hop. And for this one, Lisa sent me some beautiful lampwork beads made by Marcia Seever of ShaZazz Creations of Glass, in shades of red and orange with a subtle swirl of dark teal through the largest bead. A challenge indeed—I rarely work with these colours, perhaps because I rarely wear them myself! I have to admit that I did need to purchase a few glass beads in coordinating shades of red, to augment my stash for this challenge.

IMG_5856

The second challenging part of this hop lay in the shape of the beads—one of Marcia’s beautiful focal beads is an unusual “vase” shape. The obvious thing would be to use it as a dangling pendant, stacked with the other beads, but I didn’t necessarily want to do the obvious thing. I played around with various layouts until I came up with one I thought would work, using some translucent teal Czech glass beads to pull out the teal in the focal, as well as Czech beads in various shades of red and orange with a golden lustre and brass beads and findings. The only bead from the set that I couldn’t work into the design was the spiky one, but I’m sure it will be used in another design down the road.

Thank you for setting up such a fun challenge Lisa! I enjoyed working with Marcia’s beads immensely.

Beads, online shop

Open for Business!

Last night I took a big step into the unknown and pressed Publish on my Etsy shop, Boho Bird Jewellery. It’s something that, to be honest, I have been procrastinating about for months. So it was kind of a relief to put it all out there! At the same time, I am really really nervous—will people like my creations enough to actually buy them?

Liss's Etsy Shop

Currently I only have 12 items listed, I’ll be adding to that over the next couple of weeks—I just need to take some more photos. I’ll try to upload new items every week, Please come and visit—after all, there are only 7 weeks left until Christmas!

If you would like to see my work in person, and you live in or around Melbourne, I will be doing several more craft markets between now and mid-December. You can see the list here.

Halloween/Day of the Dead Jewellery Blog Hop

I like Halloween. It’s only just becoming a popular holiday in Australia, largely driven by the big retailers, but my kids have a lot of fun planning their costumes and going out trick-or-treating. And I have fond memories of living in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the local drag queens celebrated for at least a week, and the Halloween parade in the Castro was legendary for its excesses.

Today’s blog hop—the Day of the Dead and Halloween Jewellery blog hop—is brought to you by Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studio. The challenge—to make jewellery with a Halloween/Day of the Dead theme using at least one art bead in each piece made.

For all my intentions, I only had time to make one piece. I used one of Natalie Fletcher‘s ceramic sugar skull pendants to make a necklace—it is similar to the one I used last year for my Mexican-themed Challenge of Travel piece. If you want to know more about Mexico’s Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead celebrations, I wrote a bit about it in that post.

Anyway, instead of using silver components like last time, I decided to go a bit darker, with dark metal chain and findings. I had some lovely big orange lampwork beads from Puddle Glass Art that said Halloween pumpkin to me, and some dyed fire agate rondelles in vibrant pinks, blues, purples and oranges. The chain came from the Vintaj Arte Metal range and the twisted link was from Fallen Angel Brass.

Floral Fantasy: the final Designer Quest challenge

One of the beading groups I belong to online is an Aussie group called Beadingforum.com.au. It’s been around for quite a few years and has recently taken the decision to close its forum and move to Facebook. Sadly, along with the move, Beading Forum is planning to end its twice yearly Designer Quest challenges. These challenges are a lot of fun—a kit is put together by one of the Australian online bead shops, usually with a couple of colour choices. After purchasing the kit, you have a few weeks to come up with a design using as much of the kit as you can. And there are prizes for the best designs as picked by the judges and also by Beading Forum members.

This time around, the Designer Quest kit came from Kays Artycles. I chose the blue colourway, as I particularly liked the copper elements (the alternative was pink and silver). The key focal in the kit was a large white resin floral bead that we were encouraged to play around with and “colour in”. Along with that little challenge was a strand of lampwork beads in swirly blues and coppers, a generous baggie of cube-shaped seed beads in translucent blue with an AB finish, and a variety of copper rings, cones and cornflake beads. I added a few more of the middle-sized copper rings from my own stash.

IMG_5857

I used Vintaj patinas to paint my focal. On the back side I used Earth, and on the front, I decorated the flowers with patinas in Cobalt and Garnet with Ochre for the centres. And over the top I dabbed the Victorian Gold patina. In retrospect, I realized I had some copper Gilders Paste which might have matched the findings a bit better than the gold, but I was pretty happy with how it looked in the end. It was a bit of a challenge to incorporate into the design too, as it is a top heavy piece. I found I needed to dangle it from the main necklace, rather than, as I originally planned, string it in the middle.

IMG_6157

I added a small dangly tassel to the focal using waxed linen and some of the cube beads and cornflakes, then wired the rings and the lampwork beads together to make a necklace. The blue ribbon is sari silk.

IMG_6159

In the end I didn’t use the coiled cones (but I have some earrings in progress), and I didn’t use many of the tiny cube beads. I have a few of the lampwork beads left over too, that will probably find their way into earrings and bracelets. I am quite pleased with how it turned out. It was a fun kit to work with and definitely a challenge.

Beads, Markets

It’s less than 10 weeks until Christmas …

… are you making your Christmas list yet?

I’ve got a few markets between now and Christmas if you want to do some Christmas shopping.

Tomorrow is the first of three stalls I will have at The Handmade Show, at St Anthony’s Parish Hall on the corner of Neerim and Grange Rds in Glen Huntly. I’ll also be there on 16 November and 14 December. New to this market is the ability to pay by EFTPOS, through special arrangement with the market organisers. If it looks like a good option for me, I’ll sign on for my own EFTPOS setup.

Bowl of earrings

On Sunday 3 November, I will be at the Fitzroy Lions Market, which is at the Fitzroy Victoria Bowling and Sports Club, next to Edinburgh Gardens. I don’t know much about this market, but hopefully it will be a good day with lots of happy shoppers.

Summer colour challenge

And on 24 November, I will be back at the Bend and Snap Market behind the 1000£ Bend Café on Little Lonsdale St in Melbourne CBD. I didn’t have a great day at this market last month, so fingers crossed next time the Christmas crowds will be out in force!

bracelet collage

It looks like my girls’ school will have another twilight craft market in late November or early December, and I will do that one this year too. I’ll be selling jewellery appealing to the primary school set, as well as some easy and inexpensive Christmas stocking stuffers like earrings and cufflinks.

Cufflinks

And I promise my Etsy shop will be open soon! I have just not had enough time to work on it recently! In the meantime, if you see something you like, drop me a line via my Facebook page.

Beads, Blog Hops and Challenges

Autumn Design Challenge

I recently got the chance to participate in the Autumn Design Challenge using beads and components by Caroline Dewison (Blueberribeads) and Lesley Watt (Thea Elements). Caroline and Lesley, who are both based in the UK, combined their talents to put together little packages of goodies each containing a strand of ceramic beads from Caroline and a pair of bronze components from Lesley, and sent them off at a minimal cost to 20 participants randomly chosen from blog comments.

Although I wasn’t initially selected, I was fortunate enough to get chosen when one of the chosen participants pulled out. A couple of weeks later I received these lovely beads in the mail.

IMG_5855

I decided to make three pieces using these beads. The first, using the pretty enameled flower from Lesley, is a simple but super-long necklace. I matched the colours in the pendant with a little bag of vintage Czech beads I received from Lennis Carrier (Windbent) in a swap we did earlier this year. According to Lennis, these beads, in luscious pinks, reds and purples, are from the 1920s and 1930s! The flower is wired to the pink melon-shaped ceramic bead as well as a couple of the Czech glass beads to make a substantial pendant.

Vintage flower necklace collage

The second piece is another necklace, this time using the chocolate brown ceramic heart bead made by Caroline, as well as the two larger dark brown ceramic beads. I added Czech melon beads in shades of pink, burgundy and dark bronze. I think I’ll call this one “Dark Heart”.

Dark Heart Necklace collage

Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to finish the final piece, a bracelet using the pretty bronze patinaed connector. I’ve picked out some beads to use, but that’s as far as I have gone with it.

I’d like to thank Lesley and Caroline for putting together such a fantastic little package of beads to play with, I’ll definitely be back for more! If you’d like to see what other participants have made, here are their blog links:

Beads, Books

New books and a thank you to CBC

I’m quite active in several bead/jewellery design groups on Facebook. A couple of months ago, one of those groups, Creative Bead Chat, had a big giveaway competition to celebrate reaching 2000 members. Of course, I put my name down for pretty much every prize offered! And to my surprise I won a book donated by Tammy Jones, the editor of Jewelry Making Daily, the online presence of publishing company Interweave’s Jewelry division. Not only that, but Tammy actually sent me two books!

IMG_6015

Here are the books I received. I have to say, they are both fabulous, with some wonderful ideas for projects! I took a quick photo of a couple of the projects I’d like to do when I have some time (and the right tools too, metal stamps are definitely on my Christmas wishlist this year).

To save on postage, the books were sent to my parent’s holiday place in Colorado, and as they have only just returned from their annual US trip, I have only just received them. Thanks Dad for carting them from Denver to Buffalo and then all the way back to Melbourne, it’s much appreciated! Needless to say I have not had much time to look through them, let alone attempt one of the projects! But I thought I would take the time to say a big thank you to Tammy Jones, as well as to the Creative Bead Chat/Artisan Whimsy community, ably run by Melinda Orr, Marla James, Natalie McKenna, Cynthia Machata and Linda Younkman!

Now, if I only had time to sit down and play!

Mucha’s Autumn—Art Bead Scene September Challenge

This month’s Art Bead Scene Challenge inspiration picture was the irresistible Autumn by Alphonse Mucha. Mucha’s Art Nouveau illustrations are among my favourites, I love the sinuous flowing lines and nature inspired themes.

Autumn from "The Seasons (series)", 1896 Alphonse Mucha Oil on Panel Colour palette by Brandi Hussey
Autumn from “The Seasons (series)”, 1896
Alphonse Mucha
Oil on Panel
Colour palette by Brandi Hussey

This particular painting, one of a series representing the four seasons, is largely in shades of russet, orange and yellow, with little pops of green and dark browns. A very autumnal palette!

I used the colours in the illustration as my inspiration for this bracelet. Last year I took part in a gift exchange and one of the gifts I received was a set of beads by Tennessee-based lampworker Marie Sawyer, which just happen to be in similar swirly patterns of pinky oranges and browns. I paired three of them with some green Czech glass beads and a green maple leaf. The clasp echoes the vine tendrils in the illustration.

IMG_6007

I also made some earrings with the leftover pair of beads.
